It is with sadness that the College of Dermatology announces the passing of Dr John Henry Steele-Smith on the 23rd of March 2023.
Dr John Steele-Smith was a founding member of the Australian College of Dermatology and prior to the formation of college had been a member of the Dermatology Association of Australia and the British Association of Dermatologists.
John was born in 1929. He attended Fort St High School and then studied Medicine at Sydney University (then the only university in Sydney). He graduated in 1952.
After graduation John became a Junior Resident Medical Officer (JRMO) at Sydney Hospital and in the following years at Concord Repatriation General Hospital where his interest in Dermatology began.
In the following years he commenced training for the Diploma of Dermatological Medicine (DDM) whilst also working as a General Practitioner and in 1958 to 1960 was Registrar in Dermatology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Camperdown, NSW.
Having received the DDM in 1960, he commenced practise in Dermatology with rooms in Macquarie St, Sydney and Belmore St, Burwood. He had consultant positions at Sydney Hospital, Concord Repatriation General Hospital, North Ryde Psychiatric Hospital and Auburn Hospital. During this time John also had a practice in Auburn, Liverpool, Campbelltown and from 1976 in Beecroft.
John retired in 1998.
John was a family man with interests aside from dermatology. He was also an active member of his church and had interests in farming. He had great joy in many friendships , especially in his local Probus Group.
John is survived by his wife Alice (also a member of the Australasian College of Dermatologists) and his children and their families.
